Onion Rings-style crispy beer-battered onion rings
Thick-cut onion rings in a crunchy beer batter that shatters on bite, served hot with a tangy dipping sauce.
Ingredients
- 2 large white onions, cut into 1.5cm rings (separated)
- 150g plain flour
- 50g cornflour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 200ml cold beer (lager or pale ale)
- Oil for deep frying
- Dip: 4 tbsp mayonnaise, 1 tbsp ketchup, 1 tsp horseradish, 1 tsp lemon juice
Method
-
Whisk flour, cornflour, baking powder and seasonings. Pour in beer, whisk to a thick batter (coat-the-spoon consistency). Rest 10 minutes.
-
Heat oil to 180°C.
-
Dip onion rings in flour first, then into batter. Fry in small batches 3-4 minutes, turning once, until deep golden. Drain on a rack.
-
Mix dip ingredients. Serve immediately.
Notes
Cold beer + cold batter = crispy. Warm batter = oily.
