Fakeaway recipes in Coventry

Historic city with strong Indian food scene, next-door to Birmingham's Balti Triangle.

Coventry is a historic city — Lady Godiva, the bombed-out cathedral, the rebuilt city centre — but most of the local food culture isn't well documented because it's just across the border from Birmingham. Anyone in Coventry who's after a proper curry heads to the Birmingham Balti Triangle, 15 minutes down the M6.

That said, Coventry has its own curry mile on the Foleshill Road and around the city centre. Family-run Pakistani and Punjabi restaurants, with rich masala and karahi. Standard Nott'm fare but done well.

For British, the proper Coventry Godcake is a local specialty — a pastry with spicy filling, traditionally given by Godiva to passing merchants. Most bakeries in the city centre still make them.

For chains: McDonald's, KFC, Subway, Nando's. Pizza Hut and Domino's. Greggs is everywhere.

Coventry-specific: Godcake (recipe is hard to source outside Coventry), and the proper Samosa Chat (samosas crushed and mixed with chickpeas, onions, tamarind sauce). Both reproducible at home with effort.
