Fakeaway recipes in Belfast

Ulster fry, soda bread, and the seafood that built a port city.

Belfast food culture is built on the Ulster fry — the Northern Irish breakfast. It's a full English but with bread soda (soda bread, made with buttermilk and baking soda) fried alongside the eggs, bacon, sausages and black pudding. Soda bread is the local bread — soft, dense, slightly sour.

Belfast is a port city, so seafood has always been central. The Belfast docks used to be the biggest shipyard in the world — Titanic sailed from here — and the seafood scene grew up alongside. The Mourne Seafood, the Belfast Prawns, the Mourne mountain lamb — these are the local signatures.

The Cathedral Quarter has the strongest concentration of restaurants. The Lisburn Road has the late-night takeaway strip — pizzas, kebabs, chippies. Botanic Avenue has the student-fare area.

For chains: McDonald's, KFC, Subway, Nando's, Pizza Hut, Domino's. Greggs is everywhere (it has a strong NI presence despite being NE English). Burger King and Five Guys have good coverage.

Belfast-specific: Ulster fry (the proper one with soda bread), Belfast prawns (warm-water prawns, smaller and sweeter than Atlantic), dulse (dried seaweed eaten as a snack).
